The Show That Almost Wasn't Ottawa, September 23, 2002 - Local band, the Picklecatz, were sent scrambling on Saturday night when their performance at The Underground was suddenly cancelled due to the unexpected closure of the club. The Underground, located at 1077 Bank Street, was undergoing renovations that forced the club to temporarily close its doors. The cancellation was a major setback for the Picklecatz who were using the performance to promote the release of their new 4-song CD, "Catz' Tales." Combined with the last-minute notice late Saturday afternoon mere hours before the band was supposed to take to the stage made the issue into a potential disaster. "We were pretty disappointed when we heard the news," reported Patrick Calnan, drummer and booking agent for the band. "But just after we started calling friends to let them know the show was off, [Picklecatz manager] Boris [Mann] pulled off a miracle." Boris arranged a last minute booking of the basement hall at Branch 351 of the Royal Canadian Legion located at 330 Kent Street and saved the day. Within minutes, the performance was back on track and frantic calls were made to let friends and fans know the show was being re-located. Posters announcing the change were also taped on the doors of The Underground directing people to the Kent St. Legion. "I'll drive a shuttle service between the two venues if I have to." remarked Boris to the band. In the end, everything went smoothly as the Picklecatz performed two sets of original material in front of an enthusiastic audience along with musical special guest, Ray Lavoie, who opened the show. Ottawa's own Picklecatz are an up-and-coming original rock band who have recently released "Catz' Tales", a 4-song CD, as well as headlining an evening at the Ottawa Fringe Festival this past summer.
